Case Study- Partial Discharge Monitoring of GIS with RM EYE

Gas Insulated Switchgear Monitoring Using Enterprise Level APM, RM EYE

Overview

A major industrial client in the Asia Pacific region aimed to conduct UHF partial discharge measurements on a 400 kV Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) utilizing pre-installed UHF sensors. The measurement activities were performed on three sensors located on each phase of the GIS, strategically positioned near both sides of the isolator and earth switch. The main goal of this initiative was to carry out partial discharge measurements and accurately identify partial discharge events within the GIS system.

The Challenge

Without an efficient partial discharge monitoring system for their gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), the industrial customer faced the following challenges:
  • Unplanned outages

Gradual insulation degradation initiated sudden faults, leading to unexpected failures.

  • Reduced reliability

Due to unexpected failures, the availability of the asset suffered, reducing the quality of their industrial output.

  • Operational downtime

With the asset becoming offline due to failures or repairs, the industry faced major operational issues.

  • Increased maintenance costs

Fixing damaged insulation or replacing components became costly and time-consuming.

The Rugged Monitoring Solution

Rugged Monitoring implemented a UHF PD edge device combined with our advanced APM software, RM EYE to monitor and identify the slightest PD activity in GIS:
  • UHF PD Edge-Device

CPM601, along with universal connectors and cables, which were directly mounted on the pre-built GIS sensors, ensured continuous PD measurement.

  • Advanced PRPD Analytics with RM EYE

Identified the severity of partial discharges to prevent catastrophic failures of the GIS bay. Additionally, it helped detect surface contamination, corona discharges, and high PD magnitude in high-voltage GIS.

The Outcome

Rugged Monitoring’s customized solutions, based on the customer’s specific operating requirements and applications for GIS, enabled early detection of PD failures and aided in proactive maintenance planning.

  • Enhanced system reliability and reduced risks
  • Easy fault categorization and noise elimination
  • Continuous PD monitoring
  • Maximized asset longevity

Our system supported continuous and periodic monitoring for retrofit installations, helping to identify PD problems early and preventing failures, thereby ensuring reliable system performance.
