Partial Discharge (PD) Monitors

PD Monitors Technology

Partial Discharge (PD) monitors are advanced diagnostic systems that work in conjunction with PD sensors and remote monitoring software to collect, analyze, and communicate PD events across various electrical assets. PD monitors are composed of both hardware and software components to ensure continuous real-time data acquisition of critical PD activity.

Most PD monitors include:

  • Signal Acquisition Hardware- PD sensors for continuous monitoring.
  • Data Acquisition Units– For real-time, high-speed conversion of analog-to-digital sensor data.
  • Signal Processing- To declutter the noise and filter data for advanced analysis and fault classification.
  • Software and Analytics Platform- To diagnose and visualize processed sensor data for real-time analysis of partial discharge failures.

How Rugged Monitoring’s PD Monitors Work?

Rugged Monitoring’s PD monitors capture and analyze high-frequency energy emitted during PD activity to identify the type, severity, and location of insulation degradation. When a localized dielectric breakdown occurs inside or on the surface of insulation, PD sensors placed at various critical points capture the emissions. These are sent in the form of analog signals to PD monitors, which convert them to digital waveforms and record various parameters for further processing.

Using bandpass filtering, phase or time-gating, and cross-correlation, Rugged Monitoring’s PD monitors isolate and eliminate noise and false positives. This digitized PD data is communicated to advanced asset performance management or remote condition monitoring software for further analysis and to provide real-time, data-driven diagnostics of PD faults.

Why is it better

When compared to traditional insulation diagnostics, Rugged Monitoring’s PD monitor offers an indispensable solution in the modern asset management framework. With high acquisition bandwidth, fast sampling rate, and high sensitivity, our solutions ensure accurate diagnosis of PD signals. Our online and offline systems, along with compatible PD sensors covering various HF to UHF ranges for MV/HV/EHV/UHV electrical assets, provide early warning of developing insulation faults, helping network operators prevent unplanned outages.

Designed for both indoor and outdoor use, RM’s PD monitors offer multi-channel, scalable options that seamlessly integrate with remote condition monitoring software (PD Connect/RM EYE) for optimized and cost-effective partial discharge monitoring.

With easy installation and customizable options across diverse asset applications, Rugged Monitoring’s PD sensors enable accurate and reliable condition monitoring of PD activity.
